How a Coach can help you perform better at work

perform better at work There are times when we struggle to perform a role at work, or have a challenging manager, or difficult team member. This can lead to a lack of motivation, feeling demoralised, poor performance, not feeling “one of the team”.

A coach will dedicate time to listen to you, hear what you are saying, and understand more about what is happening for you. This is your time to talk about what is happening in the work place, what your challenges are, what you would like the outcome to be.

Through open and honest discussions, you will remember what skills you have that can be used to perform a great job. At the same time, you may identify some areas that need developing. You may be able to learn these new skills with the aid of a coach or perhaps look for a course or a peer to learn from.

A coach will also work with you to understand what you have achieved, reminding you that you have completed successful activities before and will do so in the future. Your confidence in your ability will grow.

If you are struggling with a challenging manager a coach will work with you to understand if there are personality differences and what the best way is to approach your manager and the team member. For example, they may like a lot of detail you might not. By understanding this and working on your confidence you can communicate with the manager in the way they like and understand and consequently acknowledge you are doing a great job.

Understanding your own values is important to remain motivated at work. If your values (what is important) are being challenged or not met at work then you are more likely to be demoralised and struggling with performance. Your coach will work with you to identify your values and determine how they align with your manager and or the work you are doing. By listing our values by priority, you can then look at your options and decide the best course of action.

Ask yourself

  • What have I been struggling with that I would like to change?
  • What do I want from my job?
  • What is stopping me getting a coach to move me forward?
