Tips for working through being outplaced
Having been through a couple of redundancies and managed a couple of teams through the redundancy process, I have experienced how it can impact those leaving the organisation and those remaining behind.
My tips for people being made redundant are:
- Believe in yourself
- Look at what you have achieved
- Make a note of all your skills and experience
- What challenges have you faced and how did you overcome them
- Acknowledge what you are feeling and be kind to yourself
- Be open to options
- Continue to work professionally with those that are remaining
- Hand over key information you know those remaining will need
- Make time for yourself.
My tips for managers and leaders making people redundant are:
- Keep communicating
- Have an open-door policy so people can come and talk to you
- Show empathy
- Share what you are going through
- Prepare of a reduction in peoples focus and output
- Make the hand over process as smooth as possible
- Capture key knowledge from those that are leaving as soon as possible
- Manage the potential increase in workload for those remaining
- Manage your own situation and well-being
My tips for those people remaining in the company are:
- Acknowledge what is happening to your colleagues
- Work out what information they have that you will need
- Make time for handover of knowledge
- Consider what the changes mean to you and your workload
- Discuss the situation with your manager
- Remain positive
- Show empathy
- Don’t feel guilty that you have kept your job
- Manage your own situation and well-being.
It is really important to remember that everyone’s experience of being made redundant or taking people through the redundancy process is unique to them. There will be a process to follow and some common feelings and behaviours. However, the impact and result will be specific to each person.
