The value of having a coach during and after being outplaced
Being made redundant a couple of times I can identify with others who are going through the same process. The experience is unique to each person but I have found there are some common feelings of:
- Hurt
- Angry
- Decrease in confidence
- Concern about not being employable
- Thinking they are not valued
- Worring they are marketable
- Believing they won’t get another job.
On the flipside, sometimes people feel:
- Excited about the prospect of making a change
- See it as an opportunity for something new
- Providing the time to do something they have always wanted to do
Managing and leading a team through a redundance has its own challenges. The manager is still managing the team to deliver while the leader is leading them through, what can be, a painful process. From my own experience, I was having to have difficult conversations knowing I was:
- Having to let go skilled staff
- Having to increase the work load of those who are remaining in the jobs
- Loosing people, I trusted
- Loosing people, I enjoy working with
- Having to increase the work load of those who are remaining in the jobs
- Handle my own redundance while being positive, yet vulnerable, supportive while requiring support.
Whether you are the manager or leader or the person being made redundant, having a coach will help.
Coaches are there for you!
They will listen to you; creating an environment where you can talk freely and in confidence. They will understand this is all about you and what you are going through. You can trust them to be fully focused on you and your situation.
During the coaching process, the coach will help you to:
- Believe in yourself
- Identify what you HAVE achieved
- Identify your skills and experience
- Identify areas where you are lacking confidence and work with you to regain your confidence
- Look at what your options are and consider the pros and cons
- Identify any training you may want to do.
For leaders and managers, the coach will:
- Listen to the challenges you are facing
- Acknowledge what you are experiencing and feeling
- Build your confidence to have those difficult conversation
- Work with you to remember the positive times during your role as a manager and a leader
- Work with you to remain motivated and engaged with your teams
- Keep you focused on your own well-being.
